Street Moms

On the streets of Mysore, we encountered Kavita*, a woman trapped in a cycle of abuse and addiction, whose journey from homelessness and despair to independence and hope demonstrates the transformative power of compassionate intervention.

We met Kavita in 2003 on the streets of Mysore where she lived with her husband and one son. Her husband was abusive, and she ran away from him several times, only to return to him. She drank a lot, spent a lot of time in the local police lock-up, and did not take care of herself or her little boy. She became pregnant again, and through that process learned of her HIV status.

During this time, we got her the right kind of help at a compassionate, knowledgable HIV clinic that counseled her and helped her through the pregnancy that resulted in a healthy, HIV-negative little boy. We also helped her escape her abusive relationship.

Today, Kavita takes good care of herself and takes her medicine regularly. She earns a living cleaning houses and has watched both her sons grow up into productive young men who are continuing their higher education.

How We Help

  • Medical and dental attention for all healthcare issues

  • Housing stipends—we help these women find housing so that they no longer have to sleep on the sidewalk.

  • Interaction with other members of society through our volunteer programs

  • Our children’s shelter—many of the street kids have lived at Karunya Mane

  • Kumari’s Ashram—a shelter for destitutes recovering from hospital treatments

With Your Help, We Can Do More

Every day, our team walks the streets to find those who need help most. Because we're consistently present in these communities, we've earned the trust of people who've been let down by everyone else. Through this dedicated outreach, we've connected countless homeless individuals who desperately need medical attention and just to know that someone cares.

Your donation turns these daily encounters into transformation stories. With your support, we can reach even more vulnerable people hiding in plain sight—people everyone else walks past but who we refuse to ignore.
