September 2021
With your past Covid-related donations, we were able to get all of our adults and kids over 18 years vaccinated, and have helped a number of destitutes with food and much needed medical attention. We continue this work.

We've been doing this charity "work" for a long time now, since 2005-ish, and we've had many rewards along the way, like when a life is saved or one of our kids excels in school. [More]
The donations we are receiving from you are going here:
feed the homeless three times a week
pass out masks to the people living on the streets; they gladly take them
provide groceries and stipends to those we help, including poor, orphaned HIV+ kids, teens, and women, and other destitutes
install one more toilet at our children's home so we can set up a second isolation room (hopefully won't be needed but likely will be)

Our kids at Operation Shanti were OK until a couple of days ago when one of our boys tested positive for COVID-19. We are testing more kids and are waiting for their reports. Everything is delayed. [More]
It's been a challenging year for our little ones, but they are persevering and are healthy. We've been around long enough now to see the first homeless kids we took in, who were 6-10 years old at the time, continue their high school and college educations. We currently have six in college and eighteen in 9th to 12th grades! [More]
During these disruptive times, we remain hopeful for better days, and we offer you a few of our "then and now" stories to brighten your day. Any chiId can grow and change, if given the chance and if we pay a little more attention to those who need help. Many of you have paid attention, and our kids benefit from your generosity. [More]
So far, Mysore has avoided a surge in Covid 19 cases (less than 80 to date). The city has been effectively shut off from outsiders, and the police are enforcing very strict movement rules. Most people wear masks (mandatory as of May 1), and people will be fined for spitting in public. Our kids have been in our compound since mid-March, their daily routine is keeping them busy. Everyone is healthy. No outsiders are allowed inside. [More]
We hope that everyone is practicing social distancing and other recommendations during this difficult time. At Karunya Mane, home for our 40+ kids, life has changed a bit with Mysore, India, following a shelter-in-place until at least March 31. Some of our kids' exams were postponed until after March 31; other kids completed their exams. Surya finished his 10th-grade exam, and Divya and Vijayalakshmi completed their 12th-grade exam. We are sure they did well as they diligently prepared. [More]
Prema and Shanti came to live with us in 2008. Both girls had had difficult childhoods up to that point -- Prema was homeless and Shanti lived with her single, ailing mother in one room in the slum. Shanti struggled in school for a long time, giving it her best but, eventually, becoming quite displeased with her performance. We then gave her the choice of joining a nursing certificate program at the hospital near our home, even though she was in the middle of 12th grade. Shanti agreed and started in September. [More]
Even with India's progress and burgeoning middle class, the economic benefits elude so many of the country's poor children. Kids fall through the cracks and suffer unnecessarily and in inhumane ways, lacking even the basic needs. Yesterday, our friend Rukkhi (whom you helped a few months ago) asked us to help her friend's two little kids, Sandeep (age 9) and Bhuvaneswari (age 7), who really need a new childhood. They remind us of why we continue to do this work and that the success stories that we share, although full of hope, are too few and far between in modern-day India. [More]
The 12th grade public exam scores in India have been tallied. Four of our kids took this very important exam this year. In the state of Karnataka (where we are), the average score was 62%. Let's compare this to our kids' scores… [More]
As we come to the end of a tumultuous year (globally), we want to highlight the stability of our charity work and the steady progress being made by our kids. Our accomplishments are the results of your continued support of our work with destitute women and children in India. [More]
Happy kids are always fun to be around. They are silly, cute, and guileless, and can really make your day. When a child is unhappy, especially in a group home like ours, it's quite noticeable and affects everyone, so we make an extra effort to help unhappy kids as best we can using our in-house counselor and external mental health professionals. Your support helps us do this. [More]
The kids are in the middle of their school year and, as all kids do, are growing up quickly! At Karunya Mane, our children's home, two of our young women are in college, four teenagers are in 11th grade, and a large chunk of the rest of our kids are becoming teenagers. We find ourselves facing new and exciting challenges and opportunities to ensure that they all get what they need to grow up to be the best that they can be. [More]
Summer vacation (April and May) in south India is upon us and, so far, it's been a good two-month break. Our tenth graders took their public board exams in April and passed with fIying colors, thanks to their hard work and your support. [More]
We want to focus this e-newsletter on everything that our kids at our children's home receive from us, which is really about what they get from you, our supporters. Our kids, who were homeless or living in squalor in slums before coming to us, are given not just shelter. We're not simply babysitting them. We're not rehabilitating them only to get them back to their old lives. [More]
At our children's home, we've always focused on giving our kids the chance to lead well-rounded lives by providing assistance in all areas of need, including education, health, and housing. We see lots of positive changes and are encouraged every year by the progress that our kids are making. [More]
Read about how your donations are being put to work for our long-term programs and for our new recipients, a poverty-stricken family who found themselves in an unexpected tragic situation, and Padma, a homeless woman who now lives in a house! [More]
Haven't the past 10 years just flown by? We started our work 10 years ago on the streets of Mysore, with our first group of kids who lived there with their moms. Most of these kids are still with us at Karunya Mane and are enjoying a childhood and their teenage years... [More]
The kids at Karunya Mane finished their final exams for the year at the end of March and are well into a summer vacation full of activities. Project Food & More continues to provide HIV+ kids and women with monthly care packages and urgent medical related financial assistance. The women in Project Street continue to do well; they are living more independent lives and are taking better care of themselves. [More]
As we enter the holiday season, we at Operation Shanti realize just how much we have to be thankful for, largely because of the support we receive from you. [More]
Welcome to the April 2013 edition of our newsletter. Things were busy over at Operation Shanti, as our kids have just finished their end-of-term exams! April is the beginning of summer vacation, which means attending summer camps (the kids really look forward to this!). [More]
We’re in our seventh year of our work and our children’s home, Karunya Mane (KM), has been open for almost five years. In this newsletter, we talk about educating our kids and the issues we often face doing so. The kids sure are getting taller as they continue on the right path to good health and good grades in school, and we are proud of what they are accomplishing. [More]
We’re finishing up our third year at Karunya Mane, our children’s home, which now provides care for 41 children. Everyone’s doing really well in school, some are doing exceptionally well, and the kids are enjoying just being kids. Project Food and More, started three years ago, now supports 52 kids with monthly care packages, and we continue to help the street kids and homeless women on the streets of Mysore. [More]

Our 43 kids at Karunya Mane continue to show improvement and progress. We even got back three of our “runaways” from last year, and for this we are very grateful. Project Food and More now supports 46 kids, up from 30 six months ago, and we continue to help the street kids and homeless women living on the streets of Mysore. [More]
It’s been a year since we opened our shelter, Karunya Mane. We are quite pleased with the progress of our kids living there, as well as how our newest effort, Project Food and More, has been received. We’re also starting an annual list of Operation Shanti Extraordinary Peace Makers, recognizing five supporters who go above and beyond the call of duty. And, for our donors in India, see the news on our recent listing on GiveIndia.org. [More]
In this issue, we highlight developments at our shelter, Karunya Mane, which we opened in February of this year. We also talk about our newly expanded Project Food and More, started in September of this year to help more destitute kids and families. [More]
Our big news is the opening of our first shelter, Karunya Mane (in the local language karunya means compassion and love for the poor, mane means home). We also want to highlight our experiences with our women with HIV/AIDS, given its prevalence among the destitute and illiterate. And, a couple of our recent volunteers share a few words about their experiences working with our kids and moms. [More]
Individuals prosper when they have the capacity to help themselves and are provided the support that enables them to improve their lives and the lives of their children. Our efforts in the areas of medical, education, and housing are central to helping our individuals develop to their full potential. We were busy this past summer with our kids and moms in India. We’d like to share with you what we've been working on, to let you know how your contributions are being put to good use. [More]
