Things We Need
in memory

For the poor living in rural areas or on the streets who cannot get to a doctor, bringing the doctor to them is a solution. What's needed is simple: a caring and qualified doctor who understands the health needs of those living in poverty, and funds to support the effort.

The children and moms on the streets, being outcasts from society, most need proper monitoring of a particular ailment. We help with medical care by making use of all available medical services, taking them to doctors, purchasing prescribed medicines for them, and by accompanying and supporting them when undergoing hospitalization at local medical facilities.

The Serious Conditions

Tuberculosis

Being poor in India often means contracting tuberculosis because of cramped living conditions and/or weakened immune systems. We help our kids and moms get proper treatment when they are diagnosed with tuberculosis, and we monitor them to make sure they take their medicines for the duration (usually 6-9 months). Tuberculosis is easily cured if one properly follows doctors' instructions on taking ATT (antituberculosis treatment).

HIV/AIDS

In India, the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS is daunting and many doctors still don't understand the disease. Our moms and kids have been shoo'ed out of hospitals upon a doctor learning of their HIV status.

Nevertheless, we continue to seek out available resources, and have found excellent treatment centers for HIV patients. A few of our moms and kids are now registered with these centers and receive consistent and compassionate care for their conditions, including pre- and post-natal care for an HIV+ mom and her newborn.

Medical Clinic for the Poor
We expect to open an outpatient medical clinic adjacent to our Karunya Mane shelter for destitutes. From this clinic, we will serve the poor in villages and slums who need medical assistance with:

Dr. G
Our Dr. G treating a little patient.

  • free outpatient services for basic ailments at our clinic; referrals to other medical facilities in the area for more serious conditions
  • regular visits by staff and volunteer doctors to villages, tribal areas, and slums to provide medicines and basic treatments
  • sponsoring camps/seminars on a health topic relevant to the targeted population, with the specific objective of imparting education and knowledge on good health habits
  • free medical services and support to street children and moms; see our Street People Program for more information
